Thursday 5th March - walks ***** – Staverton Thicks and Orford Quay – sunny and mild.

After yesterdays all day fog where it was only about 7 degrees on the coast today was wall to wall sunshine with the most amazing blue sky:) Gave the sunrise a miss today as I have been out early two days running so did my exercises packed a yummy chicken sandwich and headed out for a walk/picnic just after eleven, was not sure where to head for but chose the ancient woods at Staverton Thicks near Rendlesham for a walk in the peace and quiet. Things didn’t start well when the small parking area was full so we had to park in the Butley Road so had to walk a little further but it was through pine woods so that was no problem but as it was a day for sweatshirt, shorts and sandles I did scratch my legs on the brambles! You cross the Orford Road and quickly reach the first of the old knobly oaks with the path covered in freshly fallen holly leaves. We walk over to say hello to the large field of pigs who run away but they quickly return to guzzle water, it then onto the best bit as we wonder past the better spaced old trees, their branches still bear of leaves look lovely against the blue sky! We amble down the hill to the lake wher ethe noisy geese take flight! Then back to the van and we drive the 5 miles to Orford stopping at the castle to take a few pics, it looked lovely with a blossom tree in the foreground made even better when a Peacock butterfly landed right in front on me! We then found a parking spot and found a bench near the Quay to enjoy a top picnic overlooking Orford Island and with a gentle onshore breeze it was a very pleasant way to while away an hour! Then a quick walk to the delict boat, away the quay before returning to the van for the 27 mile drive back, it wa snice to venture a little further away from Felixstowe today!
